Posted by jmtb02 Feb. 19, 2008 @ 11:23 PM EST

I have never sat down and made a list of the most influential games on my life. Seeing that Newgrounds had a "Favorite Games" section now on user's profiles, I decided to finally make that list. Feb. 19, 2008 | 11:32 PM DX-weazel says:

I'd agree with about 85-90% of that. What makes me lol is there isn't a single Sonic game up their (someone owes me $20).
What I don't see up their though is Mass Effect and World of Warcraft (If you liked Warcraft 2, wait till you play 3).

Feb. 20, 2008 | 11:47 AM jmtb02 responds:

The thing is that Sonic wasn't a huge innovator, which made me discouraged from adding him. Sonic 2 probably should be up there... that game was fantastic. Also just about every sonic game made after Sonic CD was terrible.

Feb. 19, 2008 | 11:33 PM ngfan14 says:

Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts 2, and Guitar Hero 3, those games should be on your list, i like nearly all of the games on your list except Harvest Moon, great list

Feb. 20, 2008 | 11:43 AM jmtb02 responds:

Final Fantasy 10 was okay... could never get into it too much. The railroaded storyline just irked me.

Kingdom Hearts 2 was a fantastic upgrade to the original, I agree. Should be there.

Guitar Hero 3 didn't do it for me. Getting hit with the difficulty curve for the last set made me realize they are not making it fun anymore... they are making it impossible. I was also not a huge fan of the constantly changing in-game advertising. I am buying a $60 game with $75 controllers... least they can do is spare me a bit more than the constant brand advertisement.

Feb. 19, 2008 | 11:37 PM Gr31v says:

Heh, it looks awesome.

Though, it seems more or less that you have compiled a list of the most popular and top rated games of all time so nobody would complain because everybody loves them. :D

Oh, nice game btw. Too bad I epically phail at math.

Feb. 20, 2008 | 11:39 AM jmtb02 responds:

Oh some of them aren't too popular, by any means. Uniracers was definitely a cult classic that not too many ever played, and most people won't even know what Tempest is :).

Feb. 19, 2008 | 11:45 PM Kart-Man says:

Oh, good, you recognized Katamari Damacy, Lemmings, and Tempest. Normally people forget about those.

Feb. 20, 2008 | 11:48 AM jmtb02 responds:

You are making me all giddy pointing those three out :).

Feb. 20, 2008 | 2:02 AM WritersBlock says:

I have to say that more people need to play Sam and Max hit the Road, Lemmings and Worms. Also, have you played Day of the Tentacle? More people need to play that too. Looks like you prefer mario to sonic, I'm a fan of the old sonic games. Yep, looks pretty good. Out of those games that I've played, I'll agree.

Feb. 20, 2008 | 11:35 AM jmtb02 responds:

Actually, it was Day of the Tentacle that got me locked into these games. Definitely need to add that somewhere. Ever play Full Throttle? Definitely on par!

Feb. 20, 2008 | 2:03 AM WritersBlock says:

Oh, I forgot. You're missing Banjo-Kazooie, imo, the best game for the N64.

Feb. 20, 2008 | 11:36 AM jmtb02 responds:

It was good, but feels repetitive brushing up against it's much tastier predecessor Mario64.

Feb. 20, 2008 | 2:43 AM ShirtTurtle says:

wario ware katamari woo

Feb. 21, 2008 | 11:50 AM jmtb02 responds:

Woo indeed.

Feb. 20, 2008 | 5:10 AM ZekeySpaceyLizard says:

I was about to poop on your face for not having Kirby Super Star for the SNES on there, but then I saw Bioshock, and my rage was subdued.

FOR NOW.....

Feb. 20, 2008 | 11:38 AM jmtb02 responds:

I considered Kirby Super Star, but decided that just having Kirby's Adventure, the original title for the NES stands alone as a better game. Of course Kirby Super Star does have the original Kirby's Adventure in it, but Adventure came first.

Feb. 20, 2008 | 1:41 PM Healthy says:

Dude I like your list, ever play Kingdom hearts 2, I would have wrote inside that list the kingdom hearts, cuz there both pretty good.

AND WORMS!!!

Is anyone ever gonna make that game online, because you should tottaly do it!

Feb. 21, 2008 | 11:44 AM jmtb02 responds:

Territory War by Afro-Ninja has some pretty similiar gameplay to Worms.

Feb. 20, 2008 | 2:18 PM x-factor11 says:

You forgot Glover :O, HOW DARE THEE..

anyways I can agree with most of that list.

Feb. 21, 2008 | 11:43 AM jmtb02 responds:

Glover huh. I can't even remember what that game was about.

Feb. 20, 2008 | 6:58 PM Pixellator says:

Completely, really, good. I agree with 99%-100%.

I really enjoy how you included the oh so old and poor Ocarina of Time. That game was awesome! Did you have a rumble pak? Then you could have used that stone of secrets or something to find hidden clues and items :o

Feb. 21, 2008 | 11:43 AM jmtb02 responds:

Of course I had the rumble pak, it came in my Starfox 64 package! I ate so many AAA batteries that year.

Feb. 20, 2008 | 7:05 PM BadPun says:

It's got worms, myst, lemmings and pokemon. And you didn't overlook Majora's Mask, which is cool.

I think the original Final Fantasy deserves a spot.

Feb. 21, 2008 | 11:44 AM jmtb02 responds:

I'm not sure if I really liked the original Final Fantasy. It's pretty dry and rudimentary compared to the other titles.

Feb. 20, 2008 | 7:15 PM WarSyndicate says:

Streets of Rage 2....I remember that game..... It was so AWESOME....I'm gonna pull out my emulator to play it (I should really buy the actual game with a Genesis though)

Pretty good selection of games..

Feb. 21, 2008 | 11:45 AM jmtb02 responds:

They released it recently on XBLA, I've been poking at it for a while.

Feb. 20, 2008 | 9:36 PM zdps says:

Is it just me, or is twilight princess not on there? i know all the talk about it being the best game ever left fans a little dissapointed, but still in my books it scores a 9/10. please explain why it isnt on here.

btw all those games you have on your list are awesome!

Feb. 21, 2008 | 11:46 AM jmtb02 responds:

I'm on the fence for Twilight Princess... still giving it a few more months to decide if it was really as epic as I thought it was. In some regards it was excellent, but for some reason there were some minor annoyances that made the gameplay difficult this time around, and hard to get back into each night. Swinging the wiimote was one of those.

Feb. 20, 2008 | 11:00 PM SK-Skittles says:

Those Games Were Some Of My Favourites <3
Uniracer and Bioshock WOOOH!
Even The Sims Halo 3 and Prince of Persia are there
You Should Add Kingdom Hearts 2 :D That game is awesome
Kingdom Hearts is sort of Strange how it came through though lol
when people heard of them mixing Disney and Final Fantasy With that weird
Strange strpyline to do with "Hearts" everyone was like WTF!?! THATS GOTTA BE THE GAYEST FKN GAME EVER!!!! >:O!!!!
Then somehow everyone starts liking it It made me actually like Mickey Mouse again ROFL!!!!

Feb. 21, 2008 | 11:48 AM jmtb02 responds:

Kingdom Hearts manages to do a lot with a lot of content... it really showed how to make a game that blends two completely different franchises.

Feb. 21, 2008 | 12:25 AM jokerscard says:

Haven't played Harvest Moon in ages!

Feb. 21, 2008 | 11:48 AM jmtb02 responds:

Same here... they keep releasing sequels but I haven't even gotten past Harvest Moon 64.

Feb. 21, 2008 | 1:20 AM xTOXICxEMPIRE says:

I am SO glad you included super smash, pokemon blue, zelda games, and Sam and Max.

Battletoads D:<

Feb. 21, 2008 | 11:50 AM jmtb02 responds:

I LOVE Battletoads. Combo engine, fly eating... it does a platformer/brawler good.

Feb. 21, 2008 | 11:22 AM mattomga says:

it doesn't have to be thare but one of my favorites is megaman 64 i just liked it.
but megaman 2 is beter o ya and matrix path of neo that game is sick.

Feb. 21, 2008 | 11:49 AM jmtb02 responds:

Megaman 64 was a pretty dull platformer that made it 3d for the sake of being 3d at the time :)>

Feb. 21, 2008 | 11:28 AM mattomga says:

sorry and sonic games but i like sonic 3

Feb. 21, 2008 | 4:52 PM M1KES says:

How can you not include metal gear solid in the list?? Any one of the 3 would more than qualify for it.

Feb. 23, 2008 | 4:49 PM jmtb02 responds:

MGS 2 or 3 is probably worthy. I need to play those games some more.

Feb. 21, 2008 | 5:05 PM BadPun says:

Even if the first Final Fantasy was dry, it set the layout for RPG videogames everywhere, so it deserves a spot for it's historical impact.

But I liked it, so I'm probably just trying to defend my love of the game nobody liked.

Feb. 23, 2008 | 4:50 PM jmtb02 responds:

Very true :). I just couldn't take it for long. It's like trying to play any RPG on the NES... it's a lot of work.

Feb. 21, 2008 | 9:33 PM Atgod88 says:

Pretty good, even though its not technically a real video game, i think darkcut 2 should be up there, its beautiful man. Btw, is there going to be a darkcut 3?

Feb. 23, 2008 | 4:49 PM jmtb02 responds:

Oh dear, lol. Yeah there will be another Dark Cut sometime in the far future.

Feb. 21, 2008 | 11:23 PM ConAir says:

Great list so far, I ctrl+F'd a few games and found out you had all of my favorites up there too (myst, KH, portal, etc.) ...except one - GTA 3, probably one the biggest landmarks in gaming of all time and definitely one of the best. I think it deserves a spot somewhere amongst all the greatness, unless there's a reason you didn't put it up?

While I'm at it, was Halo 3 seriously one of the best of all time? For what, the replays? I'd say one Halo's enough to cover the whole series, but series that are so different like Zelda OoT and MM definitely deserve separate spots.

Feb. 23, 2008 | 4:48 PM jmtb02 responds:

Halo 3 for multiplayer... it seriously changed the standard of how multiplayer gaming works. For that matter, Halo 2 might have been a better choice, but Halo 3 mastered it.

Feb. 22, 2008 | 2:04 PM Hammerypart says:

This is gonna be one looooong comment, ready? Here goes!
I'm gonna cover all the games in this except the one's I haven't played, which is a no brainer methinks.
Super Mario Bros 2: Damn straight! I loved that game! Prefered New Super Mario Bros though.

Ocarina of Time: Quite possibly one of the greatest games out there, especially when it came out on the gamecube as a special edition, which is sooooo hard to get hold of these days.

Tetris: Weird russian band at the end! Nuff said! Also the music was awesome.

Portal: Yeah, evil computers, acid, portals, an fantabulous ending, this game had it all. And some sweet music at the start to!

Lemmings: I sucked at it royally but it deserves a place because of origionality....and the ability to send them plunging to their deaths when your bored.

Bioshock: Hmm... a gripping story, the audio diaries were a nice touch, so were the creepy moments like those multiply staues, or the one that appears right behind you after using the weapon upgrade station...or the evil dentist guy...brr

Katamari Dynasty: Rolling rolling rolling, gotta keep on rolling...hmm? You were saying something?

Donkey Kong: Naaaaah, the big ass ape never did it for me, except in Mario vs Donkey Kong, hey, that should be up there I think.

Super Mario Bros 3: Wait was that the one that had the Racoon suit? Other than that it didn't improve on 2 that much.

Super Mario World: Ahhh....the origional, I loved that, sucked at it but loved it, especially the plane and submarine levels.

Super Mario 64: Your Nintendo fan, right? There's no way so many mario games could be on an unbiased list, still, this one deserves to be there, 3d was a good step for mario, even though Sunshine wasn't as good.

Smash Bros Melee: Just wait until the sequal, it is gonna be epic!

Zelda Windwaker: Booyah! Cel-shaded goodness! And a good game to boot! The final boss battle defied some belief, GIANT PIG!

Super Mario Galaxy: The ice flower, the music that acompanies it was enough to win me over, and I managed to get all the stars! Finally!

Doom: Nope, can't see it being here, now Quake! There was a good game! Especially 4, I can't really remember why though, of course! The high-rez guts and blood!

Guitar hero 2: What is it that everyone see's in this game? Why not just learn to play a REAL guitar? It makes you look like 90% less of a prat!

Zelda: Link to the past: It was waaaaay to long for my short attention span...Oracle of Ages and Seasons should be up there instead, they were better in my opinion.

Zelda Majoras Mask: 3 days...3 days...3 days...creepy? You have no idea. Side quests were fun though, even if no-one remembered you after you had to rewind time. Inside the moon was cool too.

Worms: The origional or one of the sequels? I liked it back when it was one of the older ones, beacause the scenery was a bit more whacked out back then.

Myst: I really didn't understand that game, peaceful though and there was a sense of satisfaction when you figured out what you were supposed to do.

Super Mario RPG: I prefered Paper mario to this one, although RPG did have the better music. I wonder if it will come to virtual console?

Harvest Moon: Its been a while since I played that, loved every time chewing minute of it.

Prince of Persia: The sequels were bad but the origional was a shining beacon of 'Platformers don't completely suck!'-ness. Alright combat as well.

Pokemon: Arrgh! I hate these games so much! What is with these games being so popular! Ever since the first one they've been re-using the same old idea over and over with slightly touched up graphics and some more crappy pokemon to collect.

Kingdom Hearts: No matter what anyone else says, the better graphics, the more replay value, extra worlds, better companions, the origional had the more epic boss battle, I mean sure, in the 2nd there was a huge dragon thingie, but in the first it was a bleedin' planet sized bugger who really, really wants you dead. The who, 'My god! Riku is evil? Oh noes thing is good to, and the fact you get to turn into a heartless at one point, I bet most of you don't even remember that bit!

The Sims: Must burn them all! BWOHAHAHAHAHAH!

Halo3: Microsoft= Money Grubbing, that and the fact they plan on making another, and another, and another... seriously, watch through the credits and you find out that Master Chief ain't dead! OMG! NO WAYZ! Now we have to play through another crappy sequel with little or no plot and without the psycho computer which sounded brilliant.

Things I think should have been in there:

Starfox Adventure: The best graphics on the Gamecube ever!

Neverwinter Nights 1 or 2: I loved every minute of these games from the start of winning the harvest cup (2) to fighting evil lizard queen at the end of No. 1 there was nothing but virtual dice throwing goodness.

Age of empires: The 3rd one most probably, the introduction of guns is a huge tactical advantage. And they are far better than arrows.

Morrowind: And yes I know Oblivion has better graphics, but its so, small! And I hanker for some cheap goblin smashing goodness for the cheapest price around! The whole 'Turn into a werewolf' thing was cool to.

Tabula Rasa: An MMO that tried to revolutionize the way you play and sure it failed epically, but the most important thing is that it tried, and came out with a pretty good game too.

Mario Kart: BLUE SHELL OBLIVION! Sure its cheap, but watching the agony on your friends face as they drop to dead last is priceless, at least until it happens to you.

Meteos: It's like Tetris except upside-down! Ooooooh, I love the sense of panic when it doesn't quite make it.

Mario Football (Wii): Kick the crap out of people, ONLINE! It also offers a good, steady learning curve in the main campaign and some kick arse captains.

Soooo....I think i'm done here, this better total up to an impressive list.

Anyways, the Hammerypart says: Cya 'round!

Feb. 23, 2008 | 4:51 PM jmtb02 responds:

Geezus, yeah, you had some gems in there. Age of empires definitely. Thanks for the feedback :).

BTW Meteos wasn't THAT fantastic... much bigger fan of Lumines.

Feb. 22, 2008 | 4:37 PM Jindo says:

No Final Fantasy X? D:

I also recommend that you play Jazz Jack Rabbit 2 :).

Feb. 23, 2008 | 4:52 PM jmtb02 responds:

Final Fantasy X was a railroaded game, which bothered me since Role Playing Games tend to be a little more open and exploratory.

Feb. 22, 2008 | 7:26 PM retyuoligkl says:

Pokemon?

Feb. 23, 2008 | 4:47 PM jmtb02 responds:

Revolutionized the way we handle plot, inventory, and character relationships. 150 different artworks, stats, and upon that hundreds of attacks, just for creature interaction!

Feb. 22, 2008 | 7:53 PM supertoria12 says:

Im down with that! I've played half of those games and I agree, they rule!
I've got:
Kingdom Hearts
Harvest Moon

I've also got almost all the pokemon games too!
Great taste in games bro!

Feb. 23, 2008 | 1:32 PM Jindo says:

I saw a comment about adding Glover to the list, followed by you not remembering it D;.

Glover is that awesome atari game where you're the glove-hand and gotta bounce balls around these kickass worlds, I loved that game D;.

While I'm mentioning Atari games for PSX, Pong was pretty kickass ;D, especially the original-themed level at the end of the game (the black and whiteness <3).

Jade Cocoon, Rolan's Curse 2 and Croc 2 are also great blasts from the 90s :)!

Feb. 23, 2008 | 7:27 PM toxicdevil93 says:

HALO 3 ANND ROCKBAND ARE TEH AWESOMEZORS

Feb. 24, 2008 | 10:49 PM jmtb02 responds:

Newb gamer!

Feb. 23, 2008 | 8:09 PM hagaya says:

nail on the head good...all good stuff, especially battle toads and crono trigger, I thought I was the only one who know these games existed, but lemmings wasn't the greatest...ah well, one in like fifty who cares

Feb. 24, 2008 | 10:41 AM souled says:

Maybe Amplitude? Or even Pacman?

Feb. 24, 2008 | 10:51 PM jmtb02 responds:

Oh dear no not Pacman. It had a large impact on the gaming industry, but I am not sure I like it that much or has it influenced me that much.

Feb. 24, 2008 | 5:14 PM Lambinvoker says:

Google "Cave Story"; on the first match that comes up you will see a tribute site where you can download the game and the English patch (it IS freeware so it is 100% legal). After playing it I guarantee it will make your list.

Great list, btw.

Feb. 24, 2008 | 5:24 PM Thegluestickman says:

I TOTALLY REMEMBER FULL THORTLE!! Dear lord itd been forever since I played that game! and Jindo, Glover was for N64

Feb. 24, 2008 | 10:49 PM jmtb02 responds:

Haha, all the SMUD engine games were fantastic. Day of the Tentacle was the first one I beat.

Feb. 24, 2008 | 5:35 PM Thegluestickman says:

oh, and i probably should leave some comments about the games you named,

I have Final Fantasy 3 for DS the saving feature makes me want to kill!

What about LOZ: Twilight Princess and Phantom Hourglass they were pretty kick ass!

what are your thoughts on Shadow of the Colossus? I thought it was pretty cool considering you have to use logic instead of shooting 3 million times and thats it.

I thought Super Mario Galaxy was pretty cool considering its awesome gravity features, but Nintendo needs a fresh character something other than Link or Mario...

In conclusion:
Pretty awesome list you got there !

Feb. 24, 2008 | 10:49 PM jmtb02 responds:

Oh, sorry for that confusion. Final Fantasy 6 is what I meant... it was released under Final Fantasy 3 as well.

I still need to decide on Shadow of the Colossus, it's a pretty damn good game.

Feb. 25, 2008 | 1:00 AM BoMToons says:

How about CONTRA and the original TMNT arcade game?

I guess you were really serious about SMB2 when you mentioned it to me the other day. We have to get together and play it sometime, I've got to see you in action.

Feb. 27, 2008 | 1:53 AM jmtb02 responds:

Yeah, TMNT the arcade game is pretty hard core. Contra is as well but I was never a Contra fan.

Feb. 25, 2008 | 11:59 PM Kajenx says:

You forgot Monkey Island. :p

Feb. 26, 2008 | 10:33 AM Hammerypart says:

Oooooh, I'm back! Just got a few more things to add.

1. Psychonauts! I am the milkman! Yeaaaah, anyways, that guy who made it sure as hell knew what he was doing! Some of the acting was a bit cheesy but thats nothing special.

2.Super Monkey Ball: So. Deviously. DIFFICULT! If you could complete the origional in under 10 lives in one sitting you are a god of gaming.

3.Kororinpa: Me like. Even though its just Super Monkey Ball except a bit less fiddly, the extras were fai awesome.

4.HOLY TROMBONE ON A POGO STICK! You've got Megaman on that list and not Metroid? Or did I miss it? Long story short, it needs to be on there, ridley shooting action! Hooyah!

5.Beyond Good and Evil: Now this game is a classic, with no sequel in sigh this needs all the attention it can get! Maybe if enough people whine about it then we might get another one with everyones favoourite wrench totting pig. There were some other characters in it to I am led to believe.

Anyways, I be done now, cya later!

Feb. 26, 2008 | 7:07 PM kkas says:

Golden Sun ??

Feb. 26, 2008 | 11:05 PM Suspended-3rd-Chord says:

Grand Theft Auto?

God of War?

Feb. 26, 2008 | 11:58 PM MattTheParanoidKat says:

Final Fantasy III? This wouldn't happen to be the mistranslated version known better as Final Fantasy VI. Or is it the true FFIII?

If Terra is the main character than it's a-okay.

So far, great list, especially Chrono Trigger. Fucking Akira Toriyama (DBZ creator) did the Character designs. So yes, that game rules.

Feb. 27, 2008 | 1:52 AM jmtb02 responds:

Yeah, totally the American Final Fantasy III, the one on the SNES. The real FFIII kicks my butt.

Mar. 1, 2008 | 4:00 AM Hoeloe says:

I liked Sonic Adventure 2, also was surprised at the lack of Crash Bandicoot or Prince of Persia, they both rocked (but Crash did sort of die after he left naughtydog) but, from the ones I've played, I'd say you've got a pretty good list there, nice job.

Mar. 1, 2008 | 8:06 AM Jindo says:

Once you got far enough in Final Fantasy X, you were free to travel to just about where ever you wanted to, this could be to face new bosses, or unlock secrets and such.

Even before then, it was worth playing just for the storyline (which rocked).

Mar. 1, 2008 | 10:57 PM Stevezor says:

Is this Battletoads?

Also, you've got some really good games there, IMO. Lemmings, Doom, Guitar Hero 2, Sam & Max: Hit the Road, WarCraft 2 being my favourites of the list.

Mar. 3, 2008 | 2:44 PM Rudy says:

Hm, I'll agree with you on the following:

Final Fantasy VII
Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Super Mario Bros 3
Super Mario World
Super Mario 64
Smash Bros Melee
Zelda: Windwaker
Super Mario Galaxy
Zelda: Link to the Past
Zelda: Majoras Mask
Pokemon Red/Blue (Yellow is where its at.)
Kingdom Hearts

Other games I really like would have to be the Tales Series. Tales of Symphonia was the best though. :)

Mar. 3, 2008 | 2:44 PM Rudy says:

Oh and don't forget Sonic Adventures ;)

Mar. 5, 2008 | 8:44 PM SAROTH says:

Pong and Super Mario Galaxy belong up there too, other than that, it's pretty dang close.

Mar. 5, 2008 | 8:45 PM SAROTH says:

Er... Scratch that last part, I didn't see Suoer Mario Galaxy up there before, I see it now. =P
