What Do You Want for Christmas?

Posted by jmtb02 - November 28th, 2007

Already Christmas is coming (earlier than ever), and the housewives are running rampant as we speak to find the hot toys and gifts this year.

This is the first year where I am not really sure what I want for Christmas. Sure, there are always things that I kind of want (like the 28 DVD complete Twilight Zone collection), but it's not like I need something like that. For some reason, I do not have anything I really, really want this year. Maybe the separation of needs and wants finally happened, I am not sure. If anything, the only thing I really need is a few new pairs of socks and a haircut, but people aren't too ready to give that as a gift. I just feel guilty asking for something that is not very practical. But then again, most Christmas presents end up not being very practical at all.

So maybe the question is, what do you want for Christmas? Maybe you can spark my imagination.

Then there is the whole element of surprise thing. When someone gets you the gift that even you couldn't have come up with, I think that is an amazing feeling. I feel that way too, because that translates to my position as a game developer. What can you throw at your audience that totally pleases them, but at the same time is completely surprising? I think that is a big challenge for me personally... since I am making a game that many very different people will play. Making the universal surprise is quite a challenge. Maybe this is why Christmas shopping for your entire family is so hard sometimes... you are trying to make many different people wow'd with a very limited chance.

Then again, being a Flash developer is so amazing, because you have a tool that can craft pretty much anything. Most people expect for Christmas some sort of premade chunk of plastic and metal like an Ipod or camera. With Flash, you pretty much can make whatever you want and present it to thousands of people. It's a bit more difficult when you are trying to surprise one individual with one pre-manufactured gift.

So as you move closer to Christmas, and you are getting gifts for people, think about the gifts you plan to exchange. Can you surprise and wow them without spending thousands of dollars on some consumer electronic? What will it take to make someone's Christmas, and make them realize that they are getting something they truly need or want? It's definitely a challenge, but so rewarding if it is achieved. Surprising someone can make Christmas truly awesome... especially if they can surprise you back :).

And completely off-topic, but Glaiel-Gamer started this jmtb02 Day thing, and I am hoping it doesn't suck.

for christmas....

im getting iPod speakers.....
some wii games....
som other stuff....

oh, I dont think your day will suck. :) I believe golemDX is making a tribute to your ball revamped series, a preview of which can be found on his userpage. He got it coded surprisingly well actually, besides the graphics, the physics seem like, the same. Im a friend of his and he SAYS he made the code from scratch, but I bet he just ripped it. ;)

merry christmas!

Well, I'd say to get a game console dude, or something like the City of Heroes and City of Villans two-pack, it's a good game. I'd pretty much say to get things like videogames, since I'm a game freak. Well, if you or the person buying can get a game console or something like pocket-knives, a magazine subscription, a lava lamp, a camera, portable DVD player, a big fucking TV, some kind of room decoration, or some kind of things like that, then I reccomend that you get it, and if not, then good luck bro...

I WANT YOU INSIDE ME

all i want is an ipod

Sorry about that, I have to post that in everyones news post now.

Haven't you already posted an article to Front Page this week? Or do you get extra because everyone <3 you?

4 christmas, all i want is Macromedia Flash so that i could start making some flashes to submit to newgrounds!

http://metaldart.newgrounds.com/news/
post/50211 lol
Twilight Zone, how could I forget that?!?! Added to my list

I want the PBF Book that's been released. That and a Dr. McNinja shirt.

I vacuum forming table and an R4, although I'm not sure if those would interest you.

For Christmas, I will be buying myself a Wii and Super Mario Galaxy. Well, I'll get that a couple of weeks before, after college finishes.

I don't tend to buy christmas presents and haven't recieved one for over 10 years. I just sometimes give a friend a song or picture on their birthday. There was an opinion article in the Sunday Times the other day when a dude commented on a biscuit his daughter had made him, saying, 'it cost nothing, took effort to give and will take up no space. The perfect gift.'

Anyway, my point is that maybe your comment about Jmtb02 day isn't unrelated at all - giving flash for Christmas is what we should all do.

On a related topic, are you joining the split-sentence collab?

Wii, and a crap load of games

Ask not what you want, ask what others need.

Hope all you want...haha

buying presents for people is a challenge sometimes. If they already buy everything they need or want, then it's a lot harder to find them something they want.

The best present I ever bought someone was when my dad moved into his apartment, a year later for his birthday I had to get him something. He had everything he wanted, but I remembered that he never had a clock on the wall, so we got him a really nice clock. It was a perfect gift cause he really wasn't expecting it, wouldn't buy it himself, and desperately needed it.

Try to look past what people want, and take a look at what they need but don't have. If they don't realize that they're missing it, then it's a surprise and a perfect gift at the same time.

I want a yacht. i really have a need for one... :/

a Falcon mach V (it's a hellaciouslly fast gaming computer- one that costs $10,000.)

no joke. check it out.

oh, and maybe also nintendo (the whole company), and a PS3 (for Ratchet and Clank Future).

Now, back to the realistic things. IDK, maybe some more RAM for my computer, or a micro-t (it's a tiny RC truck).

But seriously, who wouldn't want to own a huge company???

BTW, for all of the people who are saying that they want a wii, unless you have some game in mind that you are going to buy at the same time you buy the wii, don't get it. I would know- I have a wii. I'm too cheap to buy any games, and I don't want to ask for them for christmas, so yeah.

If you aren't too cheap to buy games, go ahead.

But, I still recommend that you wait for February 10th, when SSBB comes out, and hopefully there will have been a price drop since then.

all i want is an i pod and a wii

Yeah, I pretty much stopped wanting stuff cause... if I need/want something I've usually bought it already : /

The element of surprise is awesome, but I associate that more with being a kid, and look forward to having that re-kindled with my own kids someday. maybe.

and finding those creative gifts for family members is indeed hard.. I've done small pieces of art before but it's so time consuming, especially when I have so many projects to work on. So we'll see how that goes...

My two(2) front teeth.
